About this deal

If you need a more powerful dGPU, there is an optional NVIDIA GeForce MX330 (2GB GDDR5, 25W) – these devices have a “G” suffix. In addition, the machine comes with a 1080p IPS panel, while for storage, it supports both SATA and NVMe devices. At least on paper, this laptop looks like a good notebook that doesn’t cost too much. Coming in an elegant and sturdy chassis, the TravelMate P2 combines style, functionality, and portability all into one device. The display boasts increased brightness, expanded contrast, and amazingly accurate colors with narrower bezels for a sleeker look and a more productive workday. Upgradability-wise, this is the area where this laptop shines bright. It has two SODIMMs, one M.2 slot, and a SATA slot. Moreover, the I/O is good given the end price of the machine – it has three USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports and a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) with DisplayPort and Power Delivery capabilities. Oh, yes, and a VGA port! To summarise, the processing power of this model is probably overkill for general office use, but the GPU isn’t anything special. The weakness of this model is that the integrated GPU isn’t anything special (on Intel), but if you’re not editing video or connecting to a 4K external monitor, the Travelmate P2 is a decent daily driver.

In terms of hardware, everything looks alright – we have a bunch of Intel Tiger Lake-UP3 CPUs and some iGPUs for the people who don’t need additional graphics power. Accidents can happen both in and out of the office, which is why the TravelMate P2 is tested and certified to meet US Military standard MIL-STD 810H for durability. This helps protects it against a variety of mishaps, which in turn reduces the risk of costly and disruptive repairs impacting your business.Considering that this laptop is designated a ‘Travelmate’, the mass of this machine is on the high side at 1.9 kg or over 4 lbs. That’s plenty to be carrying around, and this isn’t the machine you can practically hold with one hand and operate with the other. Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP215-52) has a Full HD IPS panel with a model number BOE NV156FHM-N48. Its diagonal is 15.6″ (39.62 cm), and the resolution 1920 х 1080 pixels. The screen ratio is 16:9, and we are looking at a pixel density of – 142 ppi, and a pitch of 0.18 х 0.18 mm. The screen turns into Retina when viewed at distance equal to or greater than 60cm (24″) (from this distance one’s eye stops differentiating the separate pixels, and it is normal for looking at a laptop). The performance offered on this machine is something of a mixed bag. We’ve previously tested other machines using the same Core i5-1235U and got better scores than these, and the difference may be down to the memory specs. Upgrade timing may vary by device. Features and app availability may vary by region. Certain features require specific hardware (see https://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-11-specifications). What’s interesting is that the Windows Experience Index number and the PCMark 10 scores are decent, and with a faster SSD, these would be even better.

Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced. What doesn’t need any help is the battery score as tested by PCMark10. At over ten hours, with the screen brightness turned down to 120 nits, that’s more than a working day of use. More expensive than the TravelMate P2, the Asus Zephyrus G14 has a powerful AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS processor and a discrete Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 GPU. Making it more suitable for graphics challenges, and it still has a good battery life. However, for those that travel extensively with their machine, the Travelmate P2 probably isn’t ideal from a portability perspective.

Battery life may vary depending on model and configuration. Actual battery life varies by model, configuration (including storage capacity, RAM capacity, processor in use, display type and resolution, etc.), applications, power management settings, operating conditions, and utilized features.

Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP215-52) review – not what we expected Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP215-52) review – not what we expected

We also liked the keyboard, which is big enough to have a numeric pad, even if it’s a little narrow, and the touchpad is also well-sized, but because of the numeric pad offset, it’s not very central. Included in the box was a small tray and ribbon cable that allows a SATA SSD or hard drive to be mounted inside, and this could be very useful if only for cloning the existing drive to temporary storage before upgrading the M.2 drive. The M.2 slot will take Gen 3 drives that don’t have a heatsink attached, and those can be found with capacities up to 4TB. The Travelmate P2 is affordable, but the HP Victus 15 is an even better deal. They can come with Intel 12th Gen processors or AMD Ryzen and a wide selection of discrete GPUs. With so much mass involved, at least those designing it kept a reasonable balance between the display and base so that it's stable even if the screen is angled extremely.Protect your Laptop against the cost and hassle of unexpected failure and give yourself some added peace of mind with one of our great value extended warranties! However, there is one aspect of the P2 we didn’t care for, and that was the liberal plastering of bloatware on the Windows 11 installation. If that’s one of the best, the worst is undoubtedly the screen. We’re unsure what the exact technology used in the display is, but it is not bright, and the viewing angles aren’t great, suggesting that it isn’t an IPS screen.

Based on the latest Intel Core processors and equipped with up to 16GB of DDR3L memory, TravelMate P2 notebooks can effortlessly handle common school tasks. Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP215-52)’s display in this configuration has an IPS panel with a Full HD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and good contrast ratio. Sadly, it has a very narrow color coverage (50% of sRGB) and uses harmful PWM for all brightness levels, part the maximum. While our Health-Guard profile can eliminate the issue, it is not good to see such an issue on a work device (or any device in general). Acer TravelMate P2 (TMP215-53) has a Full HD IPS panel with a model number BOE NV156FHM-N48. Its diagonal is 15.6″ (39.62 cm), and the resolution is 1920 х 1080 pixels. The screen ratio is 16:9, and we are looking at a pixel density of – 142 ppi, and a pitch of 0.18 х 0.18 mm. Removing the bottom panel isn’t a hard job. There are 12 Phillips-head screws that have to be undone and after that, you can pry the bottom plate with a plastic tool. A feature we appreciated most was that it came with an Ethernet port, although Acer was forced to make one that expands to accommodate the cable end in this case. That’s useful, especially getting the system over the tsunami of updates that any new Windows machine will be subjected. Our review machine using a 12th Gen Core-i5 processor looks like a sweet spot where you get the best deal without spending excessively. Uses harmful PWM for all brightness levels, except the maximum (our Health-Guard profile fixes the issue) (BOE NV156FHM-N48)
