About this deal

But thanks to an exhibition at Brixham Museum about the Bone Caverns the importance of the caves was once again revealed. Fossil discoveries made in the Brixham Bone Caverns contributed to today's knowledge of the extinct prehistoric animals that once roamed Brixham, including woolly rhinoceros, cave bear and spotted hyena, during the last ice age. An 11-mile, one-way loop road circles the cove, offering motorists the opportunity to sightsee at a leisurely pace. Allow at least two to four hours to tour Cades Cove, longer if you walk some of the area's trails. Traffic is heavy during the tourist season in summer and fall and on weekends year-round. While driving the loop road, please be courteous to other visitors and use pullouts when stopping to enjoy the scenery or view wildlife. The lost Bench Bone Cavern of Brixham contained the remains of Hyena, Woolly Mammoth and Neanderthal man - now on display in Torquay Museum. It is one of four bone caves of Torbay researched by Victorian scientist William Pengelly, described by some as one of the earliest fathers of archaeology. Exploring the cavern system he discovered and collected fossil teeth which Brixham Museum curator Dr Philip Armitage has more recently identified as the teeth of spotted hyaena, woolly rhinoceros, brown bear, reindeer and wild horse. Due to liability insurance you will have to be a member of the Cavern Cove Competitive Shooting range to use the range outside of your normal competition day. If you use a Cowboy stage front you will remove your brass from the shooting area. You will not use any of the NAR steel targets, NOTE: All caves are closed from September to May, to control the spread of white-nose syndrome, a disease deadly to the many populations of bats who call our caves home. Please respect the health of our bat populations!South Cumberland and Savage Gulf State Parks have several large caves, as well as a number of sinkholes, or “sinks”, which appear to make some of the streams in this park “disappear” into the ground! Some of the better-known caves and sinks are listed below; next to each is the trailhead you can use to reach that cave.

I was delighted to see part of these incredibly important structures are still visible in the cliff wall….all be it on private land.

Cave. Cavern. Same. Same. Well in a way that is true. We all use the terms ‘cave’ and ‘cavern’ interchangeably. This blurs the differences between the two. You might use the term cavern incorrectly in a conversation. The only person calling you out on your error is your Geologist friend. Without writing a thesis in geology, let’s look at the definitions and origins of these terms and then bring the question ‘What is the difference between a cave and a cavern’ within the context of scuba diving. What is the Difference Between a Cave and a Cavern? To get a feeling for how demanding and potentially deadly cave diving can be, I can highly recommend the documentary film Diving Into The Unknown, which tells the story of a group of cave diving friends from Finland.
