About this deal

They are after a mysterious something that they think Lily has - and are prepared to kill her for it.

When Cora, Elle and Bram realise their brother has been taken, they set out on a quest to rescue him. But Fairyland is full of dangers...and to overcome the Queen, and her deadly curse, they will need courage, cunning and a great deal of hope. This is a book with a great heroine and an intriguing storyline, set in an alternate Victorian Era. It talks about friendship, kindness, and hope. But there’s something sinister about the hybrid children who appear as part of the act. And before Lily and Robert can do anything, they’re captured by shadowy figures and whisked off in the mysterious flying circus to somewhere far, far away…The first in an enchanting new historical-fantasy adventure series from the bestselling author of The Cogheart Adventures. Emily Lonsdale, age 10 - 'Though I found the plot a little slow, I would recommend it if you were looking for something different.' Murder, mayhem and mystery meet in this gripping Victorian adventure, nominated for numerous awards; including the Carnegie Medal, the Waterstones Book Prize and the Branford Boase. The sentence has to make sense without the information between the dashes; it’s just a bit more interesting with the added detail. I think, had I been younger when I read this book it would have easily become one those books that I would have adored and reread a large number of times. I think it definitely fits the middle grade readership well and I certainly see a lot of younger readers enjoying it. And the cool thing is that I now have it on my radar for any of my kiddos at work who like foxes or these kinds of stories. So, Cogheart gets four out of five foxes as a rating, only losing the one due to how predictable I found it. But at the end of the day, I really loved this story.

The Branford Boase Award Judges' Comments - ‘what he does with the ideas is really good and the world-building is excellent’; ‘children reading this will feel inspired’; ‘imaginative and fun, would make a great film’. Lily and Madame Verdigris have different opinions on the treatment of the mechanicals. Your KS2 children will sort the opinions into the correct section of the table. Your class will add the words in to complete the sentences and then choose a word with a negative prefix and an event from the chapter and write a sentence including both.Freddie Barth von Wehrenalp, age 9 - 'Cogheart is an amazing book that I would recommend for anyone aged 8 and over. It is my favourite book I've read this holiday!' Isabella Campbell, age 11 - 'Cogheart is an amazing book. From the outset, the characters and the treacherous plots take you on a thrilling, magical journey of adventure and the final twists will leave you spinning.'
