I the mouth the El Dorado 15 is surprisingly spicy with sweet fruit and a little hint of vanilla. You also get a little bit of smoke and barrel, but just a little bit. This rum is very well balanced. El Dorado 15 has quite high alcoholic content (43%) but you don´t sense that at all. Very very good. 21 is marginally better, 12 is very good but not as rich and dark but much better value for money. This is a pure Demerera rum distilled on DDLs column still and then tropically aged for 15 years in ex-bourbon casks. Unlike the previous iteration, this newer bottling contains no added sugar. Chuť: Chuťově velmi bohatá a přišla mi i dost proměnlivá, při každém napití jako bych výrazněji vnímal vždy jinou složku. Při prvním ochutnání mi přišlo, že je dost ostrá, podruhé uhlazeně dřevitá, potřetí kořenitá, pak pro změnu čokoládová. Chutí mi připomínala dokonce i nasládle čokoládovější whisky, v dochuti pak zase brandy. Dá se v ní stále něco nového objevovat. (92 b)

Eredita una storia che ha le sue origini nell’impianto delle canne da zucchero lungo il fiume Demerara da parte dei coloni olandesi attorno al 1640, proseguita dagli inglesi, che nel 1650 importarono i metodi di distillazione. All’inizio dell’800 in Guyana erano presenti più di 300 produttori di zucchero, che distillavano la melassa negli impianti del paese. A nice formula is to always let the rum rest for as many year old it is. 15 years old rum have to rest for 15 minutes in the glass. To my mind, this incarnation of El Dorado 12 is better than its predecessor but isn't going to wow the masses in the same way. I also think that, at this price point, it is one of the better rums around. With that said, I'd happily a bit more for a 12 year old with a greater percentage of the pot still. This would probably put it in line with quality and price of some other good rums (I want to mention Doorly's 12, though I've not had it recently, so don't quote me on that). I have no idea how they did it, but this is even better than the previous added sugar version. The most likely scenario is that El Dorado was simply changing with their market and realizing that the rum community is trending towards purity rather than sweetness. But what I find with this rum, (and maybe what they also realized), is that their rum is just absolutely fantastic all by its own. No sugar is needed. In fact, now having had both, and even though I enjoyed the previous iteration, this new pure version is FAR superior in every way. It is richer, earthier, fruitier, and fuller than it was.

There's an edge too, of what I can only describe as dirty. This is what I serve first to friends who haven't experienced 'good rum.' It sets a high bar and rarely fails to please. Many will find it slightly on the sweet side, but not as much as, say Diplomatico. The flavor is highly complex and alluring. El Dorado Special Reserve 15-Year rum is crafted from 15 to 25 year old rums that are then blended and married together in bourbon oak casks. Prior to blending the original batches are distilled using 4 unique stills - the Enmore and Diamond Coffey stills, the Port Mourant double wooden pot still, and the Versailles single wooden pot still.
