About this deal

Throughout the novel, Onyeka is on a journey of self discovery. She learns to value and celebrate her Nigerian roots and embrace her hair which is essential to understanding her powers. That said, for all its faults, I enjoyed ONYEKA (probably on par with SKANDAR honestly). Original? No. Fun? Absolutely. For fans of the classic middle grade boarding school adventure, ONYEKA AND THE ACADEMY OF THE SUN is sure to be a hit. This sounds sad and if she dwells on it, sometimes it does make Onyeka a little sad, but overall her and her Mom have a great relationship. Night Mayor Franklefink has vanished from the Transylvanian Express - and it's up to you to solve the case! Part of the Solve Your Own Mystery seri...

I stare at the swimming cap Mum insisted I wear, resting on the floor where I threw it. I knew it was going to cause me problems. So here I am, trying to fit the ugly thing over my hair, and all Cheyenne can do is laugh. She finally stops spluttering long enough for me to get a word in. Thank you so much to the publisher, Margaret K. McElderry Books, for providing me with a copy to read and review. An empowering and fast-paced adventure, albeit not an entirely original one, ONYEKA AND THE ACADEMY OF THE SUN is a book of self-acceptance of superheroic proportions. Onyeka is stressed out about her hair, which has superheroic powers. She's desperate to find her missing father.

However while they are both playing in the water something happens and Cheyenne ends up in distress. Onyeka, not a strong swimmer to begin with, cannot sit by while her best friend drowns. She has to help her, thus she learns the magic power of her hair. Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun is a 2022 middle grade science fiction novel by British-Nigerian writer, journalist and hair care educator Tolá Okogwu. This is Okogwu's debut novel, and it introduces readers to Onyeka, a British-Nigerian girl who discovers her hair has a psychokinetic ability and goes to an elite school in Nigeria where people like her are trained to save the country. [1] [2] [3] Development [ edit ] It’s weird seeing her without the furry cosplay fox ears that usually rest on her head. Cheyenne is obsessed with Katsuki, her favorite anime character, and she likes to dress up as her. I’m used to it, but I always catch people giving her funny looks. Not that Cheyenne cares what anyone thinks. Sometimes I think she likes standing out because it makes everyone pay attention, as if she’s daring them to say something about her fashion sense. I prefer going unnoticed. Thank you NetGalley and Simon and Schuster Children’s Publishing for an eARC of Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun in exchange for an honest review. I don’t fit in here either, but it’s not always a bad thing” she replies with a grin. “Besides, it’s not as if you can change who you are, so you might as well own it.”Chey’s having a pool party for her birthday,” I replied, not bothering to mention it was a party of two. At the sound of Cheyenne’s name, Mum smiled, and I tried not to get my hopes up. “Please, Mum,” I begged in a loud voice. “You never let me go anywhere.” The focus is on adventure, but the book does include elements of Nigerian culture. It also provides a glossary and discussion of Pidgin English, which is a label for a style of communication between groups of people who don't share a language. An inspiring, original and exciting roller coaster of a book.’ Katie Tsang, co-author of Dragon Mountain Cheyenne hesitates for a moment, then pulls it from my clenched fist. “I don’t know why you let what other people think bother you so much,” she says, smoothing it out. She reaches toward me, the cap resting between her small fingers. “We don’t need to fit in.”

I plastered an innocent smile on my face. Mum is the only person who uses my full name and it’s usually when I’m in trouble. The already stuffy heat of the changing room grows hotter, and the sharp smell of chlorine stings my nose. I feel like throwing up. Okay, where is it then?” Cheyenne’s dark eyes scan the small room until she spots the swimming cap. “Well, of course it won’t fit,” she says. “It’s on the floor, you doughnut.” Before she found work in the salon, Mum cleaned toilets in one of the local primary schools. She was so thin then, her secondhand clothes hanging off her. She doesn’t think I remember, but I do. I also remember how long it took for her to find a salon willing to ignore the fact she doesn’t have a British passport and also willing to pay in cash.

Mum kissed her teeth at me. “I do not want you out and about with so many strangers. You’re not like everyone else.” Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun tells the story of Onyeka a Nigerian born girl living in London. She doesn’t feel like she fits in. Her afro hair seems to have a mind of its own and just won’t be tamed to let her fit in with her peers. Hushed whispers spread across the salon and an annoyed look settled on Mum’s face. She hates standing out almost as much as she hates me standing out. Then her face evened out suddenly, just before she gave in to the peer pressure she’s always warning me about.I’m not coming out,” I repeat, but there’s a wobble in my voice that gives me away. I’m no match for Cheyenne.
