About this deal

It's not a hazard if more than one professional photographer prefer this lense (same thing with the Canon 85mm f1.2L, Contax 85mm f1.4 and Nikon 85mmf1.4) about other all !! I own the first iteration of this lens and have shortly used the second version. The first version was plagued by serious AF issues which seemed to be less of an issue with the second version. Bokeh is very good though as is sharpness. A serious option in case your budget is tight. Note : this Sigma 85f1.4HSM is not really a 85mm lens it is shorter than both Nikon 85f1.4G AFS and Zeiss 85f1.4ZF2. Function available on supported cameras only. Available corrections or auto correction functionality may vary depending on the camera model. Let’s get to our main topic, the “Sigma 85mm Art”. There’s no question, this is a great lens. The competitors are all more expensive than the Sigma, but Sigma nearly achieves the same performance at all apertures. The bokeh quality is also great. Pros

But it's really the only weakness I see, and I don't see any limit using this lens with a FF camera. The Sigma had less lens flare (which could be a good or bad thing depending on your artistic tastes) We use Imatest SFR (spatial frequency response) charts and analysis software to plot lens resolution at the centre of the image frame, corners and mid-point distances, across the range of aperture settings and, with zoom lenses, at four different focal lengths. The tests also measure distortion and color fringing (chromatic aberration). The high resolving power that covers the entire image from the center to the edges ensures sharpness of the area in focus, and coupled with the significant bokeh effect produced by the F-value of 1.4 brings out the users’ subject in an evocative way. I really want to have a good copy of this lens in my photography equipments, so I have been trying 3 copies.Another comparable lens is also by Canon—the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM.This Canon has the same bulky feeling as the Sigma, but the quality of the bokeh and image sharpness are unbeatable. Take note, it costs three times more than the Sigma.

Because professionals palm cameras by the lens with their left hand. Why do you think large lenses have tripod mounts. It's not difficult to hold. The Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.4Gis considerably pricier than the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art. And at595 grams, it’s half the weight. It’s more compact but has a mediocre sharpness, a wide-open f/1.4, and worse bokeh than other 85mm lenses. For this price, you are simply not getting anything extra. Thanks for the review, highly informative as usual! I have eagerly waited for your expert opinion on this lens. 🙂 The rumored Sony 85mm f/1.2 has zero appeal to me, no matter how good it’s likely to be optically, because of its probable size and price. (I could probably buy BOTH the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN and the Sigma 90mm f/2.8 for less than what the Sony 85mm f/1.2 will undoubtedly cost).

As far as weddings are concerned, it is definitely an ideal focal length to have for bridal & couples portraits, but consider the limiting circumstances that weddings are burdened with (small rooms, tight & confined spaces, etc.) before purchasing any 85mm. A 50mm should definitely have a place in your kit before leaping to the 85, at least, that’s what we recommend. I've appreciated this lens together with the Nikon D700, and I think it's a very good choice to spare money (in comparison with the double costly Nikkor), keeping an high quality. The reason my eyes lit up when I saw this is that I recently got my hands on the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens. I debated long and hard whether to go with that or the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM lens. I opted for the Sigma, but in my limited use so far, I've found that it misses focus more than I like in certain scenarios. I've played with all manner of settings but haven't been able to nail down settings to guarantee a 95 percent or greater keeper rate on shots just yet. Chris M. Williams: The Sigma's vignetting charactestics at f/1.4 are impossible. I'd wager a tenner that what we are looking at is automatic vignetting correction being applied. A star performer, this lens delivers fabulous image quality with superb sharpness and contrast, negligible color fringing and beautiful bokeh. It’s a dream for portraiture and still life, not only due to the quality of the results, but because handling is so refined. Relatively compact and lightweight for such a ‘fast’ 85mm lens, it’s a joy to use. And while it’s not cheap, it’s very good value for money at the price.

I considered the Nikon AF/1.4 hood but it is quite large. AF Nikon 80-200/2.8 hood is smaller, but maybe it vignettes? There is only build quality compromise (the lens mount side exposes electronics within when focused at MFD), but am not sure how many of us really thrash our equipments. Lenstip and DXO have rated it the sharpest 85mm lens ever created, beating out even the legendary 85mm F1.4 Zeiss Otus, which isn't something that wetake lightly.” The most interesting part for me was that, at a certain distance (when Trotti tried to get all of the model's body in the frame), the Sigma struggled to find focus quite a bit. The example photos show many that are blurry and pretty much unusable. Up close, the Sigma was outstanding, but at that particular distance, it was very hit and miss.PL Water-repellent, Antistatic type. Circular PL filter removes the reflection of water surface and glass windows, and increases the contrast in landscape photography. This product is developed, manufactured and sold based on the specifications of E-mount which was disclosed by Sony Corporation under the license agreement with Sony Corporation. AF-D version is weaker in almost all respects, except maybe on bokeh ( probably those soft corners are helping here) Not only great for portraiture, this is a hugely versatile prime lens that delivers superb image quality, even when shooting handheld under very low lighting conditions. For the money, it makes the Canon 85mm f/1.2L pretty much redundant. Outright image quality is no better than from the competing Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art lens, which is actually slightly sharper, but the addition of stabilization makes the Canon more versatile. However, there are significant savings to be made if you’re willing to sacrifice two-thirds of an f/stop, in which case the Tamron 85mm f/1.8 is a top-value buy. Sharpness– Definitely gives the Canon 85L a run for its money and blows the Sigma 85 EX DG HSM out of the water.
