About this deal

This book is a very cute and well written text that is written in a rhyming format. Because it is written in rhyme, there tends to be some vocabulary words that I don't believe the typical primary students will be familiar with. In example, the word "vocation" might not be familiar to elementary students. Because of this, I would use the word map pre-reading strategy.

The text of this sweet picture-book is inspired by Tim Minchin's song, When I Grow Up, composed as part of his Matilda: The Musical, and is paired with lovely artwork from illustrator Steve Antony. Children envision all the things they will be able to do and experience, once they are grown up, those very things that will provide them with the knowledge and qualities that define what it is to be a grown-up in the first place, at least in a child's eyes... The book is beautifully illustrated by Steve Antony, an internationally published, award-winning author and illustrator of many picture books, including the Mr Panda series.

If you have an 8-year-old like I do, you will understand the wide-open-spaces dreaming of what to be when you grow up. It changes every day, and there's nothing better than hearing about those gigantic hopes and dreams. Told in Seuss-like rhyme, this is a clever, fun, well-illustrated and entertaining book for both kids and adults. Of course, I guess I should expect that from the man who is better known as "Weird Al" and who's been entertaining me with his songs and parodies since I was a teenager. These autobiographies, long thought destroyed by the Nazis, were written as entries for three competitions held in Eastern Europe in the 1930s, just before the horror of the Holocaust forever altered the lives of the young people who wrote them.

The Letter-Writer — a glimpse into the Yiddish press, as well as the Kafkaesque ordeal of a 20-year-old Jew fighting American legal restrictions against immigration One of the many picture books with this title, but as a Tim Minchin fan I was always goign to call this one of the best. In When I Grow Up , Krimstein shows us the stories of these six young men and women in riveting, almost cinematic narratives, full of humor, yearning, ambition, and all the angst of the teenage years. It’s as if half a dozen new Anne Frank stories have suddenly come to light, framed by the dramatic story of the documents’ rediscovery. I have loved working on developing the original story and providing more opportunity for the next generation to engage with our industry! Looking forward to it being out there in the wild later next week and the big plans I have for it! 🚀

When I Grow Up

Hey...Do you miss Dr. Seuss? Yeah. Me too. The posthumous works that keep being dredged up simply do not compare. The partnership will see Faithful+Gould distribute copies of When I Grow Up to their own staff as well as the local communities they work in. On the plus side, with this book I complete one of my many projects for the year. In this case it's reading all the books on NPR's "Books We Love 2021: Favorite Comics and Graphic Novels" list. When I Grow Up' by Tim Minchin, and illustrated by Steve Antony, is a fanciful story about the excitement of considering what to be as a grown-up. It not only considers more academically-oriented ideas such as being smart enough to answer all types of questions, but also the more innocent and endearing thoughts of kids who say and think the darndest things, such as being able to eat sweets all of the time, while going to bed as late as one would like. The perspective is endearing, in that it truly shows how children think and what they consider to be the most important aspects of childhood that will clearly pave the way to adulthood.

But don't just take our word for it, take a look at what other people are saying... After writing this I saw a review on LibraryThing that highlights that Krimstein seems to have changed the spirit of these letters. It worth noting. So as you can imagine the stories of teenage dreams, hopes, and hormones were particularly haunting knowing what was to come next. The Rule Breaker — a 11-year-old girl enters the contest even though she isn’t old enough, and she is the only one of the six in which we know their fate

Al Yankovic captures it perfectly with wonderful rhymes and great illustrations by Wes Hargis. (Yes, that Al Yankovic.)

As a child, the 8th daughter of a Kosher butcher loved to read, began to write, and aspired to follow in her beloved daddy’s footsteps. At 19, she wrote of her father’s death questioning her faith when she could not mourn like the men and why it was hard to be a Jew. It has a deliciously bouncy cadence that deserves extra points for cramming in the words "hydraulic torque wrench calibrator" and subversively rhyming "hedge-fund investor" with "pit-sniffing deodorant tester". Al Yankovic's "When I Grow Up", is brilliant. It is a fun filled book full of rhyming. Billy explains all the things he wants to be when he grows up in a detailed and creative fashion. He thinks since his grandpa has done so many things that he can too. Not only does this book teach rhyming, but it also teaches children that they can be anything and teaches about relationships.

It is true that some of the words may be a little advanced for small children, it is refreshing to see someone who generally trusts his audience (and plus it gives the adults like me, who don't have any kids, a reason to buy and read the book). It is not dumbed-down. This would offer a great time for parents to teach their kids some vocabulary. When I Grow Up is the song from Matilda the Musical that makes the butchest grown-ups weep with its message of uncynical hope. It doesn’t always work when lyrics are illustrated and turned into children’s picture books. However, these words — with dreamy artwork from Steve Antony — work well read or sung out loud before bedtime. After all, what child doesn’t want to imagine an adulthood where they “eat sweets every day on the way to work”? Fun tale all about the unlimited future options available to kids. The illustrations have a terrific Steven Kelloggish vibe. Should appeal to both kids and grownups.
