About this deal

This means that stray light is not well controlled, to the extent that it is intrusive when, for example, a first quarter Moon is within about 5° of the target area of sky. The Skymaster does have two clear advantages over both Omegons: on the one hand, the Celestron warranty, which is in many countries „limited lifetime“, whereas the Omegons come with the only 2 year warranty common (and mandatory) in the EU. And on the other hand, the possibility to adjust the tripod adapter to the center of gravity even when the IPD is narrower than 60 mm. So, buying these Celestrons means also buying a tripod and maybe a counter-weighted arm. But the binoculars are ready when you do: A solid-feeling "reinforced" metal bar forms a keel, from the objective lens covers at the front to the bulbous "prism warts" towards the rear. A built-in tripod adapter slides along this spine; a knurled knob tightens the adapter down at your preferred position. (When your observing night is over, the bar makes a comfortably grip-able lifting fixture; which you've likely set it at the natural balance point. So you can "one-hand" these heavy beasts into their protective case.) The next feature worth highlighting is that the optics on the Orion GiantView are Fully Multi-Coated. Therefore every lens surface in the optical system has multiple coatings of anti-reflection material added to them. This Orion GiantView 25x100 Astronomy binocular will allow you to see the night sky like never before. For binocular stargazing, the large-aperture multi-coated optics offer exceptional light gathering capabilities. Read Review

My new Helios LightQuest-HR 28x110 binos – advice for

field of view on astronomy binoculars is not as important as it is for people using their binoculars to view unpredictable, fast moving objects, like birds, it is still fairly important. Field of view is basically the width of the scene that is in view when you look through your binoculars, for a full explanation see field of view in my optics glossary. A wide field of view will make it easier to scan the night sky and find objects when looking through the binoculars. Nikon Action EX 12x50 BinocularA step-up from the mass market with a little extra magnification, excellent light-gathering and rugged construction that extends to waterproofing, comfy rubber grips and a large focus knob.★★★★We didn’t notice this stray light from any stars, but it must cause some reduction in contrast. Orion Monster Parallelogram mount, GiantView 25x100 binoculars What is good for us the consumers is that many of the new Chinese optics are now being made to very high optical standards and whilst many may not like to admit it, they perform as well as many far more expensive optics made in the west. Some popular brands include the Oberwerk which have plenty of nice features including collimation screws, Celestron's, Meade's and the excellent Apogee brand of binoculars. All of these offer fantastic quality for the price and bring giant binoculars within reach of most peoples budgets. (Take a look at this review on Cheap Binoculars for Astronomy) The Skymaster is shorter than the Nightstar and almost as light as the Argus, but it’s optical performance, in particular in terms of brightness and peripheral sharpness, is slightly inferior to the Nightstar, except when it comes to reflections on bright objects; at the same time it is clearly more expensive than the Nightstar. This makes it easy to achieve that ‘floating binocular’ effect that is the hallmark of a good parallelogram mount. The helpful instructions are detailed and well-illustrated. The image through the Vortex Crossfire HD 10x50 binoculars is sharp and clear, with stars appearing as perfect pinpoints of light. While observing brighter objects, you may detect some minor color distortion, but this is typical for binoculars in this price range. Still, the Vortex Crossfire HD 10x50 provides an excellent combination of brightness and sharpness across the entire field of view. During our review, we only observed a tiny drop-off towards the very edges of the field of view. Regarding the selection of models: it is my assumption that the Omegon Nightstar 25x100 is a „BA8“ design and therefore essentially the same instrument as the Additionally, the floppy rubber objective lens covers really don't want to stay put. They will dive off the tubes and steal away into the night at their first opportunity. Don't ever let them get the drop on you. Celestron SkyMaster 25x100: FunctionalityTip: The second number on the name of a set of binoculars is it's objective lens size measured in millimeters. e.g.: Celestron 25x100 Binoculars have objective lenses that measure 100mm in diameter. Most standard tripods can be used, but because you are looking upwards, it does mean that the eyepieces will be in an awkward position. To get around this, you either need to make sure you have a tripod that is tall enough so that you can get under it or use a chair and position yourself almost under the tripod. The Nightstar produced a nice image too, not as sharp as the Argus, but not too far behind, however there were now several „layers“ of reflections around the crescent shape, and more color fringes than in the Argus as well surrounding the planet.

Observing with both eyes not only feels more natural, but your brain can actually form a better image when when using the "information" sent to it from both eyes. I have written more about this phenomenon in the section entitled "Two eyes are Better than one" in this article on Observation Binoculars with Angled Eyepieces if you are interested to learn more. We look at how easy they are to operate, whether eye relief can be adjusted for spectacles wearers, if a binocular comes with appropriate accessories or carry bags and suggest if a particular set of binos would benefit from any additional kit to give you the best viewing experience possible. The image in the Celestron Skymaster was somewhat darker than in the Argus Nightstar, but the crescent shape of the planet crisp and clear and very well defined, with only just a bit of CA, and much less reflections and „glares“ than in the Nightstar, which was somewhat a suprise. It showed the Venus crescent overall at least as well as the Argus. Celestron SkyMaster 25x100 BinocularThese heavy-hitters are certainly not for the uninitiated binoculars-users. They're more like two 100mm refractor telescopes glued together and they give enormous reach. They're our favorites for large astronomy binoculars, and with proper care, they could give you decades of joyful stereoscopic star-hopping.★★★★ Well-mounted large aperture binoculars are a joy to use, especially for the larger deep-sky objects, so Orion’s new binocular and parallelogram combo piqued our interest. The GiantView 25x100 binoculars, which come in an aluminium case, have a Porro-prism individual-eyepiece focusing design that is covered with a thin rubber armour.

You can use these binoculars in any weather or location, thanks to their complete weather sealing. They are also fog-proof due to being nitrogen-purged. With BaK-4 prisms and multi-coated lenses, you can expect good optics that are similar to more expensive models.

The Argus in my eyes proved better in this than the Nightstar and the Skymaster, but all three provided reasonably good ease of view. The two Omegon models provide 3mm more eye relief than the Celestron, but I did not feel that difference to be very relevant (I observe without glasses, so this may be relevant for eyeglass wearers). Although the TrailSeeker 8x42 binoculars only weigh 23.1 oz (655g), we found that during long periods of observation, our arms started to shake, making it difficult to maintain a steady hand-held view. If you're prone to trembling arms or will be using these binos for long sessions, we advise pairing them with one of the best tripods for astrophotography or the best travel tripod . Most large heavy duty camera or video tripods will work for 80mm and some 100mm binoculars. Be sure to compare the weight of the binocular with the maximum load capacity of the tripod, if listed. Unfortunately, this figure is not standardized, nor will it guarantee how well it will work with a large binocular, but it is a place to start. What these coatings do is to assist light transmission. It is important to note how the manufacturer describes their coatings as they are not all created equal. Ideally you want to see "Fully Multi-Coated" which means that all air to glass surfaces have received multiple layers of antireflection coatings. If you just see "Fully Coated" or "Multi-Coated" it means only some surfaces have coatings or they only have a single coating and thus will not perform anywhere near as well as Fully Multi-Coated binoculars assuming everything else is equal. The mount arms measure 57cm between fulcrums, giving a vertical range of 75cm, making it easy to share views with people of various heights. Each SkyMaster model features high quality BAK-4 glass on their porro prisms and multi-coated optics for enhanced contrast and great low light performance. BK-7 and K9 glass can be found in cheaper products, and refer to borosilicate formulations. While used across a wide range of brands, this glass is said to lead to problematic exit pupils — in particular the field of view isn’t perfectly round, which can leave the observer with poor clarity around the edges of their chosen target. We must stress that this isn’t true for all pieces of kit, so we advise giving your chosen binoculars a test before parting with your cash.
