About this deal

Although the shaving cream and corn starch snow did not quite win the coldness contest or clean-up test, it came as a close runner up in both areas. The overall texture and ability to play with this snow for hours wins my vote for the best way how to make instant snow without baking soda! This is because a snowflake needs to pass through about 1,000 feet of above-freezing air to melt. If temperatures are well below freezing before they reach the temperatures that are above freezing they won’t have time to melt until they hit the ground. Can it be too Cold to Snow? Have fun playing with all kinds of fake snow this Winter! Let us know which sensory activity your kids loved the best! Sodium polyacrylate is a polymer. Its molecules are very long and consist of identical fragments. These fragments contain carboxyl groups that “adore” water – in other words, they are hydrophilic. This feature of polyacrylate is what guarantees the success of our experiment. How do we obtain snow in a beaker? Pour some hair conditioner into the bowl of baking soda and mix it together. Much like the water, you will want to add less if you want powdery snow, and more if you want wet and slushy snow.

After comparing these different methods on how to make snow with baking soda, my personal favorite would have to be Method 6: How to make snow with baking soda and conditioner. Finally, if you’d rather not make your own fake snow you can buy instant snow! Instant snow is great for sensory bins and kids love playing with it and watching it grow. You just need to add water! Now that your “snow” is made, you can place it into a bin to create your own small world play scene! Optional: You can also a little salt to the mixture to give the snow a little more grainy, realistic feel. Snow forms and falls to the ground when the air in the atmosphere remains cold enough to keep snow from melting from the clouds all the way to the ground.Once you and your little ones have worn yourselves out playing in the snow and building some winter wonderland creations, fill a spray bottle with some vinegar to add a little “summer heat” to the mix and see what happens. Now comes the fun part of playing in your freshly made snow! One of my favorite things to do is to of course make a snowball and then a snowman.

Depending on the type of conditioner you choose to use, it also makes your snow smell really really good (mine smelt like coconut)! Just make sure to use a white conditioner unless you want your snow to be a different color! If you really want your “snow” to feel like you just brought it inside from a freezing cold arctic blizzard, then you will want to put your box of baking soda in the freezer an hour or two ahead of time. Add about half of a 10 ounce can of shaving cream and mix the corn starch and shaving cream together (use a spoon to do the initial mixing if you don’t want messy hands).

For those of you who prefer more of a warm tropical snow (which doesn’t actually exist in the weather world) then you can skip the freezer and just cut right to the chase in making warm, fluffy, magical snow! This artificial snow doesnt melt, it is long-lasting and is even reusable when completely dried out.

Cold Test: The salt and water instant snow method is the winner in the cold test department! As long as you use very cold water, then the temperature of your snow should feel very realistic! The process of osmosis, in this case, the passive movement of water through a membrane from low to high salt concentration. What happens when salt is sprinkled on the snow?

Insta Snow fake snow powder is super fun and incredibly easy to make. Simply take a scoop (or many scoops for a cool eruption effect) and add a bit of water. Voila! Instant snow! Cold Test: The temperature of this baking soda and water snow is about as close to feeling like real snow as you can get if you put the baking soda in the freezer for a while and use very cold water in the mix. We've had some Insta Snow lying around our offices for weeks. And the most remarkable thing is that the instant snow feels cool to the touch even after it's been sitting out for days. It's simply an amazing product that is so much fun to play with! Carefully pull out the cotton padding in the diaper and shake out the tiny little polymer beads that are inside the diaper and put them into a bowl. If you want to make lots of snow, you can repeat this step with a few diapers. YES! Simply put the Insta Snow into the freezer and it acts even more like real snow. So, go ahead and make your own Frosty...indoors! While the one we made (pictured below) is quite small, you could make enough snow from just one bag to create a snowman that's 18" to 36" tall.
