Earl's style is enjoyable and I found myself amused often by both her humor and the ridiculous situations she has gotten herself into. Reading her memories I felt a bit like a was a teenager again, with all the problems and agonies I had, with the diaries I wrote (which are, unfortunately, not as funny as Rae's). I certainly wasn't bored reading this book, I just expected more from it. But that's it, isn't it? My expectations got the better of me again. As the show progresses, however, Rae discovers that the friends she deemed perfect and untouchable are struggling with insecurities of their own. Her counsellor, Dr Kester, the man who encourages her to write the diary from which these innermost thoughts are taken, tells her at one point: “You would be surprised what lengths people will go to not to face what’s real and painful inside them.”

Sophie Stanton as Principal Dixon (series 2–3), Rae’s firm but fair headteacher at college who gives her several ‘second chances’ and encourages her to go to Bristol University. I really liked the diary layout of the book, but I found the writing basic and non descriptive sometimes. Ciara Baxendale as Izzy, the sweet but ditzy girl of the group. Often cheerful and optimistic, Rae describes her as never having a negative thought. She is in a relationship with Chop.And this is my third problem actually. It's a diary. I cannot hate her or blame her for how I feel from the book because this is her thoughts. This is what she lived and this is an actual fat girl talking about being fat and I appreciate that. But this book made me realize I don't like diary format at all. It was just not my style. I appreciate this for what it is obviously but wow it was long.
