About this deal

Seriously though, is there anything more satisfying as a reader than when one such character gets their comeuppance? Sooooo satisfying, lol.

This is pitched as a love story, and it is a love story, but it doesn’t talk only about romantic love. Thank you so much to Emily from Goodreads for making this spectacular Traveling Sisters group read possible!* There is nothing quite like the big satisfying sigh you make when you come to the end of wonderfully romantic books like One Day in December. So, if you’re looking for books similar to One Day in December with some added fun, then look no further than Breakfast Under the Cornish Sun.

Bernadette is leaving her husband, Ken Manson. She has spent 30 years in a loveless marriage with her husband emotionally abusing her. She has reached the end of the tether and today is the day that she is going to walk out and leave him.

In typical Low fashion she crafted a cast of wholly memorable, realistic characters, some more likable than others. While I truly came to care about each of them, I was most invested in Bernadette’s life. She was such an authentic, kind person who’s been trapped in an awful marriage for thirty years and I really wanted her to be free and happy! Caro was also so sweet and loving, she definitely tugged on my heartstrings as well. Cammy was a lovely man with loads of charm and then there was Lila. Ugh she made me so angry, she’s definitely a hard one to relate to but I was still captivated by her story. (And her appalling behavior) I love Bernadette's character the most. She was selfless and strong. I understand why she had stayed with her controlling husband for so long because she always thought of her children before her own. But getting her freedom and knowing her worth for the very first time was the best decision she ever made for herself. Minerva Dobbs doesn’t believe in love at first sight and fairytale endings and neither does Calvin Morrisey: the guy who asks her on a date for a bet. This is one of those books where you have to set aside a bit of relaxation time so you can focus fully on all the characters. All the events take place in a very short space of time, over one day in fact. I have been talking about a few books I have read lately that have not been my normal and One Day in December was definitely one of them. This sister does not have a romantic bone in her. My poor husband.

Basically it is an episode of Jeremy Kyle waiting to happen…except all the characters appear to have all their teeth (at least they did in my head) and don’t seem to want to air their dirty laundry on television. I loved this book so much more then I thought I would. It is now one of my favorite Christmas stories, if not even my favorite, and I would recommend it to everyone who believes (or want to believe) in love at first sight, likes to read about friendships and life twists and turns. What I really loved about this book were the friendships and how everything that happened felt so real. I mean 9 years is a long time and we all know that there can happen so much! Yet, those three people still stayed strong. In one way or another they were always there for each other and helped each other through difficult times. No matter what happened to them and no matter how far they lived from each other, their friendships never faltered. Yes, there were some serious bumps along the road but that’s just the way life is and in the end they always found each other again. One Day in Winter, Another Day in Winter and The Last Day in Winter are all set on the Friday before Christmas one year apart. One Day in Summer follows the year after in early summer. Lila, who is a social media addict with no idea that her boyfriend is going to propose to her, if only he was who she wanted...Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn't exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there's a moment of pure magic...and then her bus drives away. For Laurie, there is a moment. Just one. Perhaps it is Kismet or maybe it's Destiny. She sees him at the bus stop. Laurie is inside, he is waiting outside, he looks up at the exact moment she does, their eyes meet and hold and she knows. He is the one.
