About this deal

After she had finished, we had fun with a mini ‘interview’ about the book which worked as I had read it too). On a big piece of paper draw a map of the places in the story. Talk about the map together and follow Varjak’s journey from the Countessa’s House to the city streets Make Varjak’s city survival guide It was a little different to what I remember it being from when I originally read it 10+ years ago, but that doesn't mean it wasn't as good.

In a large space children could try out some of the seven skills of Jalal eg slowtime, shadow walking, moving circles. (If children tried this with our activity ideas for Varjak Paw they might enjoy repeating this activity). Watch this great trailer made by a fan Could you make a trailer using photos or drawings of cats? Varjak Paw is a rich text that can be used as the stimulus for writing beyond the book. The following suggestion involves children writing non-fiction texts for specific purposes and audiences. this book is nearly twice as long as the first one, and the cast of characters is much bigger and more developed. i assume he is finished writing these, because this one came out in 2005, and there hasn't been another since then, but i really hope he chooses to revisit these characters, because i think this could be a successful series, if someone could keep the damn things in print!!The first four chapters of the book set the scene and introduce the reason for Varjak’s departure from the house. Chapter five sees the cat’s dramatic climb to freedom and gives readers the chance to reflect on Varjak as a character. As he sits on the top of the wall at the end of the chapter, ask pupils to think about how he’s feeling. Write up the following sentence stems: In 2010, composer Julian Philips completed an opera on Varjak Paw, to a libretto by Kit Hesketh-Harvey, performed by The Opera Group in September–November. [4] [5] Film [ edit ] Corgi Books Age 7-9 Varjak Paw is an exciting and imaginative adventure story which is great to read aloud and to look at closely with its striking illustrations. Varjak Paw is a pedigree kitten leading a sheltered life with his family. A bit of a misfit, Varjak looks and behaves differently to the rest of the family and is often ridiculed; but one day, when the family are in danger, he is the one who bravely ventures outside to seek help. Varjak soon finds himself in the city and a world of intimidating street cats and mysterious feline disappearances. In his dreams Varjak meets an ancestor Jalal and learns a mystical martial arts for cats called ‘ The Way’, which helps him survive life in the city. Eventually with new friends and new skills he is able to help his family and solve the mystery of ‘The Vanishings’. The story explores a number of themes and ideas giving lots to talk about including being different, bullying, friendship, courage and determination. Readwhat the author says aboutthe story here. Write a letter to the children from a Ms Fee Lines at the Society for the Protection of Rare Breeds, informing them that a rare Mesopotamian Blue cat has been sighted near the school, and asking for any information or pictures they might be able to supply.

The book is a fantastic mentor text, engaging children through pacey storytelling and the emerging message of the importance of friendship and loyalty. Author SF Said is a writer we can learn from, particularly in the way he creates gripping moments of tension and his detailed descriptive passages. Varjak Paw is written as a series of relatively brief chapters so lends itself to a serialised read over a period of time. This gives you the opportunity to model to upper KS2 pupils how to read aloud with fluency, accuracy and expression. Don’t interrupt the reading by asking questions or for opinions. Read it for enjoyment. Then, return to specific parts of the book to explore and teach particular skills. 1. Reading as a reader With the children, develop a framework for a suspense story that is based on one of Varjak’s adventures in the city. Age 7-10 Varjak Paw is living in the city free of the restricted life he used to live as a kitten. Yet he finds the city and its cats are ruled by the fierce Sally Bones and her gang and she is out to get him. On the run, Varjak becomes an outlaw searching for a way to outsmart and out fight his enemy. Can his ancestor Jalal help him this time? With a fascinating array of characters from the loyal Cludge to thescary Scratch sisters and a gripping adventure, this is an exciting read. A book that will give you the chance to talk about what it means to be brave, loyal, fair, open-minded and stand up for what you believe is right. The Outlaw Varjak Paw won the Blue Peter Award in 2007. Varjak Paw is a Mesopotamian Blue kitten. He lives with his family in an old house on a hill. Like the rest of the family, he has never left the house. But, one day his grandfather tells him about ‘the Way’ – a secret martial art for cats. Varjak then has to use the Way to survive in a city full of dangerous dogs, cat gangs and, strangest of all, the Vanishings. The children then write a non-chronological report, based on what they know about Mesopotamian Blue cats. The reports are then sent to the SPRB, and a reply is received in which Ms Lines asks for an explanation of The Skills that were mentioned in the reports. By now, a line of communication has been established between the children and the SPRB. Ms Lines suggests that Varjak is nominated for Cat of the Year. She asks the children to help her to persuade the judging panel that he should win. Perhaps they could write an article for the SPRB journal that tells the readers how Varjak solved the mystery of the Vanishings? Maybe, Ms Lines could turn up in person to congratulate the children on their fantastic writing! 4. This year, I made a World Book Day video of me reading aloud from Tyger, and it's been amazing to see people watching it in classrooms, libraries and homes around the world. And I absolutely love seeing all the different ways people celebrate their favourite books, so here are some of the incredible pictures I've seen this year - including the very first ever World Book Day TYGER costumes! Huge and heartfelt thanks to everyone! In October 2013, Playbox Theatre Company took on Varjak Paw in a major multi-media production. [3] Opera [ edit ]

When they were looking for Tam, who disappeared in The Vanishings. She also thought the idea of the book; that the man was taking all the cats and making them into toys and that Varjak knew this when he looked in their eyes and said ‘not quite alive and not quite dead’ was ‘quite cool.’ Brothers: Julius [4]: Living (As of The Outlaw Varjak Paw) Jethro [4]: Living (As of The Outlaw Varjak Paw) Jay [4]: Living (As of The Outlaw Varjak Paw) Jerome [4]: Living (As of The Outlaw Varjak Paw) urn:lcp:outlawvarjakpaw00said:epub:4994aa42-9d97-442e-a487-acd8b684a8ee Extramarc University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (PZ) Foldoutcount 0 Identifier outlawvarjakpaw00said Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t2795f71h Isbn 9780385750448 The first book begins in the Contessa’s House, where Varjak Paw lives with his family – Elder Paw, Varjak’s Parents, Aunt Juni, Julius, Cousin Jasmine, Jay, Jethro and Jerome. So far, I've only written those three books, but I'm working on a new trilogy at the moment. The working title for these books is TYGER and I wrote a little bit about it in this blog post.

Then discuss how they could be completed. Challenge children to come up with more abstract ideas, e.g. “I can see my future” or “I can taste fear”. urn:oclc:828434126 Republisher_date 20121009134839 Republisher_operator [email protected];[email protected] Scandate 20121008034711 Scanner scribe13.shenzhen.archive.org Scanningcenter shenzhen Worldcat (source edition) I’d say be yourself, you know ‘The Way’ you know you are right, and your family is wrong so just go with it, you know the Elder Paw is right.’ I would say it’s a really good book because it actually is. It has inspired a play, an opera and several unofficial animations.

so, yeah, it's pretty dark. but varjak has a motley "gang" of his own, with a dog and a classroom while he sleeps. so he's going to be okay. but some of the cats around him, cats that he considers to be friends... there will be consequences. i really like that this isn't a sweetie-pie story where all the good fluffy kitties are okay and all the nasty kitties get punished. there is a little of that, but it is still a little tougher than a lot of middle-grade fiction. Use a cardboard box cut down one side to make a setting for one of the scenes in the story.
