About this deal

Aroma was malty and sweet, pretty evident despite the humongous iceball always on the verge of freezing the tip of your nose: porridge, Special K breakfast cereal, caramel, ripe banana... I tad too sweet, if you ask me.

Though it continued to produce spirit for use in blends, Dufftown as a single malt would soon have its moment in the sun.

The Singleton of Dufftown 12-year-old - Whiskybase

Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). There are hardly any official bottlings. Besides this 12 Year Old, there is also a Singleton of Dufftown 15 Year Old. Nose: One reviewer rather pejoratively commented that it was like 'chewing a handful pencil-shavings with marshmallows' and although this is somewhat OTT, the nose does remind me of pencil-shavings. It's certainly very woody with perhaps a hint of sweet hay and malt. There's a touch more sweetness coming through with the addition of a tiny amount of water. On the palate lots of malt some wood and a bit of sherry but nothing exciting happens after that. It has no legs so to speak. The Singleton name was first applied to the single malt from Auchroisk in 1986 after the distillery was deemed too difficult to pronounce. When Auchroisk was later added to Diageo’s Flora & Fauna series, however, “The Singleton” was dropped.Dufftown is the name of a town in the Speyside region of the Scottish Highlands. The town itself is home to a number of distilleries including Balvenie, Glenfiddich, Mortlach, and others. This means that the name of this particular bottle could be translated as “a single malt made in a town where a lot of other single malts are also made”. I guess that doesn’t ring enough to make the Diageo marketing materials. Dufftown is, in fact, a small distillery in the town of Dufftown, with the official name of “Dufftown-Glenlivet Distillery” which does nothing to alleviate the confusion (it refers to the valley – glen – of the river Livet, not the Glenlivet Distillery). The Diageo-owned distillery has six stills and was established in the 1890s. The range includes a number of NAS malts, as well as a 15-year, 18-year, 21-year, and 25-year. This 12-year is aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and “European oak” casks, which could mean a lot of different things. It’s bottled at 40% ABV. Full disclosure: This sample was included in an advent calendar which I was sent for free. As always, I will strive to give an honest opinion on the quality of the dram and the value for money it represents. The town housed seven distilleries at one time. Such density of distillation inspired the slogan “Rome was built on seven hills but Dufftown stands on seven stills”. The seven were Mortlach, Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Convalmore, Parkmore, Glendullan and Dufftown itself.

What I find curious about this expression is that I can't find much objectively wrong with it - it is, after all, inexpensive and, from the marketing and advertising, I deduce it's aimed at new whisky drinkers - but somehow for very subjective reasons I really don't like it. Singleton of Dufftown 12 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch

The name was revived in 2006 in a plan that involved the malt of three distilleries, combined to create a single malt super-brand that could challenge the likes of Glenlivet and Glenfiddich for sales. Dufftown was chosen along with Glendullan and Glen Ord. The Singleton of Glen Ord was originally earmarked for Asia, while Glendullan was destined for the US and Canada. The Singleton of Dufftown, meanwhile, remained in Europe. Today, however, all three brands are available worldwide in an attempt to boost sales. So far, it’s been working. The Singleton regularly resides among the top five best selling single malt brands in the world. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. Perfectly Balanced, Naturally Rich and Smooth” is the wording on the label. It also tells us it is "Traditionally Batch Distilled". There are very few whiskies that I actively dislike. Certainly I prefer some to others, and I'm indifferent to many, but I seldom take an active dislike to a bottling. It seems to me that most whisky made these days is pretty well executed technically and, while many fall short of greatness, minimum standards are usually met. I find myself drinking more and more just to get that second or two of pleasure in the finish, but the roughness/wood-shaving aspect of the palate is drying my mouth and making it harder to enjoy that fleeting sweetness.

Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Nose: Dried hay, woody, nutty, shoe polish (?) a bit chemical. Resembling blended whisky smell at first, rather rough. After a few minutes it does settle down and open up, with floral aromas coming out. Touch of orange too. The town of Dufftown was founded in 1817 at the meeting point of two rivers. It was built in an attempt to provide employment for men returning from the Napoleonic Wars. Located in the Speyside region, the town would find itself at the centre of a distillation boom, following the passing of the Excise Act in 1823. About that Singelton-range, by the way, this Dufftown is the follow up expression after the demise of the Singleton of Auchroisk. The only other expressions in a Singelton bottle are those of Glen Ord and Glendullan.
