About this deal

Because the way McNicoll explains and explores what life is like for people like her, like Addie and Keedie, is so brilliant in both its simplicity and its depth, in its vulnerability and its strength, in its compassion and its confrontation. Published during the COVID-19 Pandemic pandemic to little anticipation and written by an autistic author, A Kind of Spark soon took the publishing industry by storm with its simple, but passionate and piercing insight of the world through the perspective of an autistic girl, something that has been left largely unexplored in depth. A Kind of Spark may have a story about acceptance and understanding as its central thread but this takes nothing away from the fact that the story itself is engaging and finely plotted. Please do not use it in any marketing material, online or in print, without asking permission from me first. Her debut, A Kind of Spark, won the Blue Peter Book Award and the Overall Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, as well as Blackwell’s Book of 2020.

The story follows Addie, a young autistic girl, who campaigns for a memorial to the witch trials in her village. When 11 year old Addie, who is autistic, learns about the 16th century women who were persecuted for witchcraft, she starts to lobby for a local memorial in her small Scottish village. She was definitely born out of a kind of defiance – the more that the industry pushed back, the stronger she got,” she says.

This debut novel from neurodivergent author McNicoll will bring readers to tears and have them cheering for Addie as she learns how much she has to offer the world. It's set in a town near Edinburgh where centuries ago, countless women were killed because they were falsely accused of being witches. The literature that I have encountered such as The London Eye Mystery and I Am Bat or My Brother Sammy have all been written by people who may have worked with or lived with children who are autistic but A Kind of Spark is, uniquely, a book which has been written who identifies as neurodivergent. Big Sister Instinct: Nina and Keedie both fiercely defend Addie to her cruel teacher when she's almost suspended for beating up a bully.

When the Germans plan to round up the Jews, the Johansens take in Annemarie's friend, Ellen Rosen, and pretend she is their daughter; later, they travel to Uncle Hendrik's house on the coast, where the Rosens and other Jews are transported by fishing boat to Sweden.

Addie is een enorm herkenbare hoofdpersoon, zelfs voor mij als 27-jarige, en het gaf me zoveel kracht om te zien hoe ze voor zichzelf opkwam en omging met het pesten van haar docent en klasgenoten. A stunning, moving and powerful book with a main character a lot of people - children and adults - should look up to. Ta niepozorna historia uświadamia, jak potrzebna jest nam różnorodność - przecież niesamowicie nudno byłoby, gdybyśmy wszyscy byli do siebie podobni. As she is pulled into her family's world of secrets and spells, Ramya sets out to discover the truth about the Hidden Folk with only three words of warning from her grandfather: Beware the Sirens.

A 10-episode TV series adaptation was released on the BBC iPlayer in March 2023, late debuting on the CBBC Channel, with a parallel subplot about one of the young women accused of witchcraft in the Juniper of the 16th century.Addie herself lives with her parents and twin older sisters in a village in Scotland and is struggling to get her voice heard. This story could teach so many people about autism, about how to respect people in general, about simply living your own life in your own way. tokatlayan, kulağını çeken, kafasını tahtaya vuran, sözlü tacizde ve psikolojik şiddette bulunan Duygu Tural, biz senden çok çektik ve bizim sana karşı koyacak gücümüz yoktu.
