About this deal

a few years ago, Patterson created a spin off series for his Jimmy books imprint that followed Alex's son Ali. Ali get harassed about being a cop's kid and ends up in a debate about whether the cops ae good or bad. At school, Ali faces many in his class who side with the people, that the police are never there when needed and shoot first when they arrive.

Ali Cross (Ali Cross, 1) by James Patterson | Goodreads

The catalyst this time involves the shooting of a gang member by a policeman trying to stop a shootout between opposing gangs. We at Penguin Random House Australia acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the Traditional Custodians and the first storytellers of the lands on which we live and work. And, when Gabriel, one of his middle school classmates, goes missing instead of showing up for their regular online game, Ali's determined to find him and bring him back. The first book was about Ali's missing friend Gabe and the Second is about a girl he likes who gets shot in her mothers concert. I have no idea if this is part of a story from the Alex Cross books, but it won't matter to MG readers because it's explained well enough for them without requiring them to have read another book.Ali’s desire to become a much respected detective like his father (Alex Cross) still burns brightly inside him.

James Patterson – Books – Ali Cross

But when Ali witnesses something horrible, he has to grapple with tough questions about what it means to be a detective, and a detective's son. I know that in "coming of age" books, you will see profanity and intentional disobedience of young adult characters, but this was just so strikingly different than the previous two books. Ali contacts team players Cedric, Ruby, and Mateo, and they try to break into Gabe’s Outpost bunker, but it’s booby-trapped. There was nothing funny about what was going on, but it was hard not to admire a fire that big and burning that brightly, in a guy as little as Ali. It's funny that the Maximum Ride series (which is another series written by James Patterson) is aimed at the YA market, and contains way less swearing than this book.Ali sometimes loses control of his temper and punches his tormentor, for which he gets consequences (the tormentor, not so much). In this adventure, Ali and a few of his like-minded buddies, engage in police shadowing with the aid of his friend Gabe's latest invention. While solving some of the nation's most challenging crimes, his father always kept his head and did the right thing. I devour almost any book with Patterson's name and I have followed and enjoyed the Alex Cross series. This is actually much more about Ali himself, and the impact that being the son/stepson of two police detectives has on him.

Writing in Ali’s voice with occasional cutaways to third-person chapters that follow Alex, Patterson sprinkles the narrative with pop-culture references even as he takes readers through the detective process. Ali's detective work leads to his being held prisoner by a burglar who twists his arm and punches him. In fact, when we came out of church after services, there was a crowd of people with cameras and microphones waiting for us. Do you know any kids who are being pressured (or threatened) by family members or others into doing things they know are wrong?

The story itself is thought-provoking but it’s not what readers might expect when they start the book.
