Had it been a bigger book, I would've lost interest but anyway, I really hope the next one is better in that aspect. Once you get through that, in the last 150 pages it does really pick up, and I found myself loving the direction went in.

The cliffhanger and plot twist was exciting as all hell and made me want book 2 immediately, and the amazing fluff made up for the lack of smut that I originally came here for, the author has teased more spicy scenes for book 2. I had high hopes for the romance in the beginning - especially with the whole kidnapping and girl, I love a long, angsty ride to the capitol. In hiding all her life, Layala prepares for the day the wicked High Elf King Thane will come to steal her– his powerful mate.I couldn’t put it down and when I had to (for work) couldn’t stop thinking of the next moment I could pick this up. The cliffhanger at the end was a chefs kiss(as someone who loves a good cliffhanger), it had a plot twist I did not expect. For fans of The Bridge Kingdom and A Deal with the Elf King, this arranged marriage romance about a human princess forced to wed a dark and desperate Shadow King is sure to entice!

It was interesting to see the connection between the two of them grow, despite no loner having a mate bond, and it showed they don't need it to feel for each other. Layala seems to be a completely different person in this book as well, absolutely cheesy lovesick and far different from the strong character she was before. If someone informed me this was a final project for 8th grade English, the quality would at least make sense, but alas, that does not appear to be the case. The beginning portion of the book actually had some substance to it, where Layala gets taken away by her fiancé, and they obviously meet the mean sister. My first sense of foreboding came when Thane was actually accommodating and downright pleasant to Layala.

I probably should have read reviews before diving in because the lack of steamy bits was an issue for me.
