About this deal

In a world where the Russian government is the real mob, it is the job of the Cell to take the fight to the enemy. Six years ago, high-ranking Russian foreign intelligence officer Nikolai Volkov fled the country, accused of selling state secrets to MI6. I prefer John Bald, a much more darkly written character and someone who wouldn't be phased by all the secret backstabbing.

I did think this was a bit of a slow burner initially although it soon picked up pace, and thought this was a very well written book with an engaging and believable plot line, lots of twists and full of so many intricate details.Always been a fan of Danny Black and John Porter and Bald but looking forward to more Josh Bowman stories. But there are also things that just didn't make much sense to me or remained in the air (like plot holes). Ryan's cousin was a member of the reservist 23 SAS Regiment and invited Ryan to come up and "see what it's like to be in the army".

Since retiring from the British Army Ryan has published several fiction and non-fiction books, including Strike Back, which was subsequently adapted into a television series for Sky 1, and co-created the ITV action series Ultimate Force.

This however feels like a convenient plot point, almost a USP, but this is something that feels under-developed. The amount of books I have read of late by ex Operators, that rely on the addiction part is frightening. He also starred in Hunting Chris Ryan at the BBC which was later aired on the Military Channel and played the role of Special Forces Manhunt.

Chris Ryan’s assignment included the training of Khmer Rouge troops in late 1981 so as they can have enough tactics to attack the Vietnamese forces that had succeeded in pushing them out of Cambodia.

He was also a technical, military advisor who played the important role of the Blue Troop Leader in Series 1 as Johnny Bell. During the 1980s he was part of an SAS team sent to Thailand by the UK government to train members of the Khmer Rouge in tactics used to attack civilians in Cambodia. He is recruited into ‘The Cell’, and on protection detail at a royal wedding where events take an unexpected turn. I feel that some of the books that fit this genre at the moment are showing how SF soldiers survive their service, addiction to either booze or drugs. My main problem with this novel was the character of Josh who far from being the 'best of the best' was weak and unreliable, making mistakes that put the lives of his fellow team mates and those he was protecting at risk.

Omid Hardani, a charismatic figure with a messianic complex, is believed to have taken refuge in Afghanistan after a failed assassination attempt. In Burkina Faso, SAS Warrant Officer and Regiment misfit Jamie Geordie Carver is seeing out the last days of his career on a dead-end training job. Bowman is an experienced SAS Staff Sergeant but he has a problem, an opioid addiction that he is just about keeping secret. Hunted at every turn, in a lawless country in the grip of the resurgent Taliban, Carver will need all of his fighting skills and instincts to stay alive. He stayed at Hookergate until he was 16 years old, at which point, instead of going into further education as many of his fellow authors did, which would have been easy as Hookergate School also had a college section to it, he signed up to join the British Army. However, he was then too young to continue to the next test that could have led him to joining his cousin. Ryan certainly loves to tell us all about firearms and their bullet calibers but when the bullets are flying it's enjoyable. Good thriller, Josh wasn’t my favourite character by a long shot but I understand him and it was nice to have a character that wasn’t perfect in every way. This SAS group was to make sure that the British Diplomatic staff evacuated safely from Zaire before the First Congo War broke out. The brand new thriller from SAS legend and 5 million copy bestselling author Chris Ryan - introducing Joe Bowman, the ex-SAS hero battling opioid addiction and his own inner demons.
