Richard’s previous anthology, Damnable Tales, has been acknowledged as a classic both in the UK and the US. This time it’s John Collier’s tale ‘The Lady on the Grey’, first published in 16th June edition of The New Yorker magazine, 1951.

An exiled priest in New England risks everything to try and save the life of a young woman accused of witchcraft.

[Review] Damnable Tales: A Folk Horror Anthology – Horrified

However, even after vowing to only read good books from now on, I soldiered on as I thought maybe the remaining stories would pull it all back. I thought I'd share with you this video I cobbled togethera few weeks back, charting my process of producinga lino print.

It also clearly illustrates otherwise to anyone who may still think that folk horror originated with three British films at the tail-end of the hippy dream. This time, it’s Robert Aickman’s beguiling ‘Bind Your Hair’, first published in his 1964 collection Dark Entries, and the story which closes this anthology. Should his name have somehow escaped attention, then his work (film posters for The Wicker Man and A Field in England, his lino-cut prints of folkloric entities, his cover for Edward Parnell’s atmospheric and resonant book Ghostland, and pieces featuring film and TV (most notably Ben Wheatley’s film In The Earth)) will very likely not have passed unnoticed. Primarily working in the television, he has provided graphic props for the likes of Poldark, Sherlock, Doctor Who, and the 2019 BBC adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
