About this deal

Earth is probably the hottest new board game of 2023, a strong favorite to win one of the Spiel des Jahres (game of the year) awards, and certainly the best new game I’ve played so far this year. Whatever circumstances you find yourself in, your journeys begin in a small corner of Middle-earth with an invitation to venture across the lavishly illustrated, double-sided journey map tiles. Earth is an open world engine builder for 1 to 5 players with simple rules but tons of strategic possibilities.

Event cards are often one-time bonuses that you can play at anytime but score negatively at the end, but the bonuses are often worth it. Since there are soooo many cards, there are lots of different combinations of flora and fauna to explore and the replayability is great. You also use the shared objective fauna board, where you get more points the earlier you meet the objective.Perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised this kind of theme has resonated with so many people because there’s something relaxing about earth and soil and nature. Over thousands of years of evolution and adaptation the flora and fauna of this unique planet have grown and developed into amazing life forms, creating symbiotic ecosystems and habitats.

Similar to acclaimed games like Puerto Rico and Wingspan, the active player enjoys enhanced benefits from their chosen action.Flanked by two ornate, Corinthian pillars, you’re reminded of Prior Philip’s grandiose, visionary dream. The game is very tight, you have very limited actions and there’s the potential you won’t complete your island because Gaia only goes through her deck twice. When I was low on soil, I kept thinking ‘is there any other way for me to get soil without giving Gaia soil?

Earth’s extensive card selection, coupled with double-sided fauna and ecosystem objectives, ensures exceptional replayability. With so much ground to cover and multiple side quests to unlock, every campaign will tell your own tale of adventure and heroism and, no matter what path you take, your adventures will culminate in a climactic finale where the fate of all the peoples of Middle-earth could be at stake. In this initial set up, I was on Nishinoshima island (with a sunny and cloudy symbol) with a hemiboreal climate and Monteverde cloud forest ecosystem. It takes everything that’s good about the game Wingspan and makes it all more so, resulting in a gaming experience that’s a little more complex but also provides the satisfaction of building an engine that gets more powerful as the game progresses. That last bit means this isn’t a game for younger players, even ones who have some experience at the tabletop; I’d guess about age 12 and up would be the right range. Non-active players get to do the same action, but their benefit is less—they plant one card rather than two, they gain either two growth or two cards, etc. It is incredibly satisfying to pick an action and then just keep gaining stuff, or exchanging one thing for something better, through several cards in a turn.

In this review, we delve into the captivating gameplay, strategic depth, and impressive components that make Earth a must-play for board game enthusiasts. Instead of simply tallying points, players will collect Earth tokens as they journey across the board. Earth features a diverse range of personal and public objectives, adding depth and excitement to the gameplay.Once the heroes have had a chance to explore and interact with the people of Middle-earth, the evil forces arrayed against them strike back and hinder their progress during the shadow phase.
