About this deal

Best described as a surrealist late night magazine programme with nudity and lots of Germans, Eurotrash was essential viewing, mainly because you couldn’t believe what you were seeing. Eurotrash is a true stand-alone programme, never seen anything like it before or since, and re-watching selected highlights of this box set from Network genuinely made me wish I had the whole set to go through again.

Gaultier left at the end of series 7 and de Caunes then co-presented with a range of guest presenters none of which I can remember.Channel 4's iconic irreverent magazine show Eurotrash is to be released on DVD and digital in its entirety next month.

With its surreal sketches, risqué cultural commentary and cheerily low productions values, Eurotrash was the late-night talkshow du jour in the 1990s, pulling in a whopping 2-3 million viewers per week at the height of its popularity. Anyone remember Lars von Trier tobogganing down his back garden in Copenhagen, or a freshly permed Pedro Almodóvar chewing over his 1993 film Kika on a lipstick-red sofa?Dangerous and ground breaking, it gave us half-pissed Friday night plebs a taste of what the wider world may hold. Let two devil-may-care Frenchmen take you gently by the hand and lead you into a surreal alternative world of weird wonders, celebrity interviews, sexy supermodels - and more smut than you can shake a stick at! When I meet Brits aged between 30 and 50, they tell me, “We weren’t allowed to watch Eurotrash, we had to hide behind the sofa while our parents were watching. And now Network gives a whole new generation a chance to admire the suave Antoine, the child-like Jean-Paul, the frequently PVC-clad Melinda Messenger and the late, great Lolo Ferrari with her… huge tracts of land. To put it more simply, it’s a 30-minute magazine-format programme covering all manner of alternative and surreal topics.

It’s honestly like the subtitling was done by a bot, the kind of quality you might expect from Youtube live captions. They bestowed fame on so many of their guests –who can forget Yvette Horner and her accordion, Pipi and Popo (cardboard giraffes) and the tragic Lola Ferrari. Every episode I looked at had mistakes in the translations and when I say “translations”, I mean the subtitles for Antoine de Caunes amazingly over-the-top heavily French-accented English, not even an actual foreign language.I borrowed the wife’s false nose ’cause I blocked my own” becomes “I borrowed the wise false style cause I blocked my world”. The crazy characters definitely made it, who can forget Eddy Wally, Eva and Adele, all a little surreal, but definitely entertaining. Combining cutting-edge design, illustration and journalism, we’ve been described as being “at the vanguard of the independent publishing movement. Controversy rages over whether it was Jess Franco or Jean Rollin who directed the movie, either way, thy should be highly ashamed of themselves.
