Can confirm it works fine, terminal placement is slightly different than the one in this article, so pay attention to the diagram on the relay case itself. With everything connected terminal 1 on the chime will have 2 wires (one from the transformer and one from the relay). Partly because we are using here in the Netherlands a much lower voltage for the chime then (what if have heard) is common in the US. If you enable mechanical or digital come and there is an open circuit on the chime adapter, then it would be expected for something like this to happen.

Without a wiring diagram (and it has one extra post and a mercury switch) I bought a new doorbell from Karwei, that has a built in transformer and am supplying it directly from the mains. If I am correct more power is drawn to ring the chime, but when it’s not connected I can imagine that the doorbell shut down to prevent any damage.
