About this deal

In Listen to the Land Speak, Magan’s journey traces our ancient stories through bogs, over mountains, and across rivers, recounting along the way the deep ancient myths (and the history, geography, and geology related to them) but also the stranger smaller folk tales like the fóidín mearaí, a patch of ground that looks no different from any other, but if you step on it you are catapulted into the land of the fairies. This is a strange, special yet somehow profound work that will linger long in the thoughts of those who read it. However, while these decayed people and constructs will most likely never be found, the land still remembers their shape, and what it was like when all was new. They used this connection to the cycles of the natural world - from which we are increasingly dissociated - as an animating force in their lives.

Funnily enough, I had to be rescued by the RNLI in this same area the previous year after getting caught in the equinox waves. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of historians and archeologists, there are those artifacts that have been destroyed or lost to time. So in our Lord's most solemn utterances we have the twice-repeated "Simon, Simon" ( Luke 22:31), and the recurring "Verily, verily" of St. I am bringing disaster on this people, the fruit of their own schemes, because they have paid no attention to My word and have rejected My instruction. In this book, Magan forces us to experience the grief of our loss of this knowledge while he attempts to pave the way back to connecting with our heritage. The chapters go into detail without being long winded and paint such vivid pictures of the old stories but include a modern twist.

In this illuminating new book, Manchan Magan sets out on a journey, through bogs, across rivers and over mountains, to trace these ancestor's footsteps. Luckily for us, many of our Irish myths and legends, folktales and fairytales have survived and have the attention of scholars and readers all over the world. He narrates folklore, religion, mythology, history, archeology, and his own personal memoir of Irish cultural landmarks to demonstrate the many ways in which Ireland has both drifted from its cultural past and remained ever faithful to it. He uncovers the ancient myths that have shaped Ireland's national identity and are embedded in the strata of land that have endured through millennia – from ice ages through to famines and floods.

I thoroughly enjoyed Thirty-Two Words for Field, which is a fascinating glimpse into the ancient knowledge and forgotten connotations of a language intimately tied up with folklore, mythology, and pre-history.

Only criticism is that it can be a bit much at times, and without some basic prior knowledge of certain mythological aspects/places it can make you lost. They used this deep connection to the cycles of the natural world – from which we are increasingly dissociated – as an animating force in their lives. Finding a ring in a barmbrack foretells a marriage, a dried bean a single life, and a stick an unhappy marriage. My biggest complaint about that book is that it is woefully short and touched only fleetingly on so many facts and topics that I hoped would be explored in more detail in Listen to the Land Speak.
