About this deal

Read the book and you are there in the Italian mountains with him: You can feel the stony soil, smell the wood smoke in the air, sense the snow on the wind. After the Italian armistice in 1943, Eric Newby left the prison camp in which he'd been held for a year and evaded the advancing Germans by going to ground high in the mountains and forests south of the river Po. For several months, he was sheltered and fed by local people, despite their fear of the German army and the scarcity of their own resources. He subsequently married the girl who helped him to escape, and for the next fifty years, his wife Wanda was at his side on many adventures.

They reasoned their own sons were far away, fighting, and it was their duty to help other people’s sons.

His father was a partner in a firm of wholesale dressmakers but he also harboured dreams of escape, running away to sea as a child before being captured at Millwall. To cut a long story short, Newby is held prisoner for a year, and is in a prison hospital with a broken ankle when the Italian government surrenders to the Allies in September 1943.

Love and War in the Apennines by Eric Newby | Goodreads

Dust-jacket worn with a tiny degree of loss at the top of spine and internal repairs at extremities. Part travelogue, part escape story and part romance, this is a mesmerising account of wisdom, courage, humour and adventure, and tells the story of the early life of a man who would become one of Britain's best-loved literary adventurers. Everything about this film is brilliant; more importantly, it's a testament to the indomitable will of the human spirit. At great risk to themselves children and adults carry food to the visitor, and they have a loyalty to one another that comes from a devotion to freedom, a sense that they are on the same side.

Newby is nearly captured and moves into the mountains to stay with a shepherd; villagers build him a camouflaged cave. Love and War in the Apennines is a 1971 Second World War memoir (with some changes of names and people and places, and some composite characters) by Eric Newby. There is also interesting insight into the mind of a young man who feels guilty at times about not being in the thick of war, and we know now that they were (unfairly) given the description of “D-Day dodgers” by many. The source code for the WIKI 2 extension is being checked by specialists of the Mozilla Foundation, Google, and Apple. This unpretentious but genuinely marvelous account of Eric Newby's harrowing months in the mountains of Italy in 1943 is one of the best books I've read all summer.
