Its gold color implies more aging than you might expect – the oldest rum here is three years, and most is far younger. The question of what to mix with Smith and Cross is a common one, and there are many different opinions on the matter. I prefer a darker rum like Blackwell Fine Jamaican Rum, both for its cost-effectiveness, as well as the rum’s ability to mix very well and provide that signature rum flavor, but not add too much sweetness to the drink. I'd serve it in a flight to demonstrate the range of odd possibilities that rum makers explore, but wouldn't turn to this as a daily sipping rum. If you want to mix Smith and Cross with ginger ale, some people recommend using a spicy ginger ale like Canada Dry Hot.
