About this deal

In black and gold and a bright arsenic green, this is undeniably one of the best-looking books about true crime to ever grace my desk. Long before the resort was built, the island hosted a campsite that saw a string of gruesome murders. The Sanatorium certainly has an eerie, cinematic appeal… Sinister scene well and truly set, unexplained disappearances commence and dark family dynamics emerge, with quick chapters that keep pages turning.

I did enjoy seeing Elin grow as a person, and I really enjoyed how her relationships with Farrah and Steed developed over the course of this novel. Elin suggests that maybe Porter’s bad investment prevented him from putting forth a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) development plan for the island. This impressive debut is a twist on the classic locked-room mystery in a wonderfully eerie gothic setting. Sarah Pearse won readers' hearts with The Sanatorium, and The Retreat is every bit as transporting, with another unforgettable setting and a complex web of secrets.

A “retreat” is a place of introspection, or at least where people go to “find themselves” in nature. So, she tries everything in her capacity and uses all her skills to get to the bottom of the mystery and unravel it once and for all. She studied English and Creative Writing at the University of Warwick and worked in Brand PR for a variety of households brands before following her passion for writing. Maya was the one who killed Jo, because she was the one who set the fire that hurt her sister Sofia. I think Sam’s death IS solved, she’s just trying to deal with the fact that she froze in her trauma of seeing him fall.

Author Pearse claims to have always been drawn to creepy and dark themes, including abandoned places and remotes spaces. This is the 30th book, but considering Alex has survived "Kill Alex Cross" before, chances are he survives this one.Initially, Pearse has described Le Sommet as a place overshadowed by high peaks and half-hidden by dense forests. I was waiting for another bomb to drop so much that when Caleb was the ‘only’ bad guy at the end it felt super unfinished. I JUST finished the book and immediately needed to talk this all through with somebody hahaha thanks for your post! But DS Elin Warner soon learns that the victim wasn't a guest - she wasn't meant to be on the island at all.
