About this deal

The set includes a handful of miniatures, dice, range rulers, a mat, and a Recruit Manual featuring each unit’s datasheet and guidance to help you learn the basics of the game. We previously had a similar breakdown of versions with Dark Imperium (8th Edition) in the form of 3 named boxes; First Strike (is succeded by Recruit Edition), Know No Fear (succeded by Elite Edition) and Warhammer 40,000 Dark Imperium (Now Command Edition). Perfect For You If: You’re after a more immersive learning experience, complete with a dedicated gaming board and battlefield scenery. The set’s Command Manual features a narrative-driven set of six missions aimed at teaching you key aspects of the game.

The Elite Edition is a fantastic option if you’re looking to begin or broaden your collection of Necrons and Space Marines while using the Elite Manual included in the set to learn the game at your own pace. The box itself is nothing really fancy – none of the matte or gloss finish that you’ll find on the likes of the Warcry or Indomitus boxes. The Assault Intercessor has a squad of four Marines and an option for either a Sergeant or a fifth standard Marine. With composing books for a lifestyle game such as Warhammer it’s a good idea to be mindful that it somebody with no idea whatsoever of what Warhammer is could pick this book up for the first time.

The sticker, which is printed to contain the box’s contents list, has been placed very carefully over the original contents list on the back of the box, obscuring it entirely (you can just about make out the DKoK Transfer Sheet underneath all the ripped sticker). These datasheets – as they’re referred to in Warhammer 40,000 – contain the stats and profiles for all the units in the set and a wee bit ( YOUR SCOTLAND IS SHOWING ;) – Editor) of fluff explaining what they are and what they do in their respective armies.

The Kill Team Core Book, however, is a well-written exercise in brevity and structure that other creators of rules manuals could stand to learn a thing or two from. The Recruit edition is a tempting offer, both to get a few more cheap guys to practice on and also because it purportedly includes a set of tutorial missions to gradually teach the rules. They go together very easily and there are levels of dynamism and motion that leave almost all of the previous Primaris Space Marine kits in the dust. One is the all-important (and oddly named) “Recruit Edition” book, which is essentially a beginners guide designed to teach brand-new players of Kill Team all the stuff they need to get playing. But for what it probably cost to mock up and print the box to look like an “Archeovault”, surely they could have included a sheet of card with some punch-out barricades and some box nets to fold into crates? But that’s because we have stripped this down to the barest of comparisons here, single model divided by the cost of the set.
