About this deal

Because we don’t compare the two cases, past and present throughout the narrative, I didn’t feel any sense of TENSION, like I usually do with CRIME FICTION. This case took place in the late 80s in the Midwest, and I was not familiar with it, but is a truly horrible and heartbreaking story. Ashley was born and raised in Indiana, where she continues to live with her husband, her daughter, and her beloved dog, Charlie. January’s cold case has always haunted her and now in a neighbouring town another little girl goes missing under suspiciously similar circumstances. I love crime junkie podcast, but can easily pick up on her “cliche wokeness” that is subtly injected.

Episode SummaryOn March 24th, 2012, Molly Young rushed to her on-again, off-again boyfriend Richie Minton's aid, only to be found dead hours later in his Carbondale, Illinois apartment with a gunshot wound to the head. Both January’s and JBR’s parents gave somewhat awkward media interviews that made the public suspect they were not being forthcoming about everything they knew. But if you’re a Crime Junkie (or mystery fan) who has read the book, you know that Ashley and Brit always have a LOT of questions. Both girls got lots of attention for participating in beauty pageants/dance recitals wearing makeup. This was a solid whodunnit thriller about the murder of a little girl named January, with clear inspiration drawn from the JonBenet Ramsey case.

I guessed a few things too, such as Jodi being the woman following her, and that Luke was probably the father of twins. In the briefest of moments, she’d gone from surprised at the invitation for an interview to regally accepting it, as if she’d been patiently sitting by all day just for someone to ask her.On the night of January’s murder, Dave told Billy that he was the twins’ father, sending Billy into the rage that would lead to January’s death. Speaking of the end, it’s the only part of the book I didn’t love, as there were loose ends I didn’t feel were tied up (and I love when everything is tied up neatly! Billy locks the door and confesses that he killed January accidently, and that he killed Krissy and staged her suicide because he found a letter she was going to send to Jace that implied she knew Billy killed January. I think that’s why the ending was left open, and although some people won’t like that aspect, I actually really appreciated it because we don’t always get all the answers in real life cases.
