About this deal

The entire atmosphere of the book is threatening, with ominous signs facing the group at every turn: a buzzard (vulture) following them up the mountain, other hikers warning of loose rocks and potential hazards on the trail, a reliance on a paper map that no one is quite sure how to read. Tristan cheats on Ginny regularly, (not just with her sister), and Paul has quit his well-paying investment banker job because he was accused of assaulting another woman in an elevator.

If you celebrate Christmas, I hope you're having a wonderful day with loved ones (both human and furry! The murder has happened well before they arrive, but they find themselves somewhat embroiled in the aftermath while on their hike. For starters, Lucy Clarke is queen of the destination thriller that centres female relationships, and this book focuses on a group solely of women. The story follows four friends who, on their yearly holiday together, decide to go for a hike in Norway. Upon arriving, they learn that Maggie is a ~dead ringer~ (sorry for these puns) for a girl who went missing on the mountain almost a year to the date before. First 25% is a little slow as we get into everyone’s backstories, but then the pace picks up exponentially and it moves along quite quickly after that.

The best description I can come up with for my mind-bending experience I had with this book can be summed up in the words of Jerry Garcia: “What a long, strange trip it’s been. But the book actually begins with a short chapter on Sunday morning at a police station, introducing readers to the fact that only one woman and one man make it off the mountain, both bruised and bloodied, so we alternate between the Saturday afternoon hike and the Sunday afternoon results to determine what actually happened.

In an interview, the author shared how she had been on a hike in Norway, when she started to think about writing this novel. I had initially agreed to review The Hike with no small amount of trepidation, fearing that it might be too “weird” for my tastes. Each of them at different times could be annoying or irritating but that's what made the story saucy, spicy and oh.

It’ll either work or it won’t, and I don’t want to run the risk of potentially predisposing would-be readers if I make further attempts to describe its themes or to compare the story to something else, because any more would be revealing and that would remove a lot of the magic.A deliciously dark mystery about warring sisters, their duplicitous husbands, and a hike that ends in murder. With worrying signs that someone might be following them, the sun begins to set and exhaustion kicks in.
