About this deal
By that, I mean they haven't cleaned all the imperfections out of it, making it look modern and too sharp. Received very quickly, unfortunately not as expected or advertised, picture shows DVD in Disney Classics sleeve but it didn’t arrive like this.
It also comes with bonus features including an introduction by Diane Disney Miller; inside Walt’s story meetings and DisneyPedia: Bambi’s forest friends. The scenes were storyboarded but not filmed, so what we have are fairly rudimentary reconstructions of what the scenes may have looked like.
The only pieces missing are a look at the restoration process, a short history lesson of the year the film was released (1942), and a preview of Bambi II--certainly not essential! If Bambi himself is just a bit dull--such is the fate of an Everydeer--his rabbit sidekick Thumper and a skunk named Flower more than make up for it.
A "DisneyPedia" feature about the real animals depicted in Bambi is a useful helper to let tots know that the wilderness isn't full of cuddly squeeze toys - those suckers have teeth and hooves, Cindy Lou. As I've indicated, Bambi is not simply about the growth of a boy into a man, but it has the parallel story of the cycles of nature and its place in the modern world. Many of the early Disney features have their share of lyrical moments and universal truths, but Bambi is so simple, so pure, it's almost transparent. One note: if you pause the movie, the second screen keeps going, and you will have to choose the option of syncing it up again once you start up another time. Disclosure: We received the sample for the purposes of writing this review, however, all thoughts and opinions remain our own. Extras: Language(s): English, French, Hindi, Dutch, Hard of Hearing Subtitles: English, Subtitles: English, French, Dutch, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, Screen ratio 1:1.
It is refreshing to see a restoration job that is carried out with so much respect to the original transfer, and this is far better in my opinion than the other transfers from the era Dumbo (1941) and Fantasia (1940). Please Note: The screengrabs used here are from the standard-definition DVD included in this set, not from the Blu-Ray.
