It niggled me when people referred to Leonardo da Vinci as 'Da Vinci', as if it was his surname, but otherwise the period setting and sense of place were well presented. The writing is so assured, so fluent, it was like being on a gondola in Venice yourself, being pushed smoothly along the water. When I began this story, I started to see colour’s hidden dimensions and how everything is constantly at play in the mind’s eye. Enjoyed the writing and the historical setting but the story went on a little too long, the characters fell a little flat, and it got preachy towards the end. The story builds to an exciting climax and I very much enjoyed it - having an interest in art certainly enhanced the experience of reading this book.
