About this deal

It is based on an adventure story Krindlekrax by Philip Ridley, which tells the tale of Ruskin Spear's quest to become a hero. The characters are all unlikeable, kind of bizarre and hollow, with the exception of the main two, which is a bit misanthropic in my opinion and not what I want to fill my kids head with. It was also selected by children aged 9 to 12 as the winner of the 1993 WH Smith Mind-Boggling Book Award. It started off by being one of the books he's reading for school and doing school work about it and then turned into a story before bed. I imagine they must have done a whole book topic on it, otherwise I cannot understand why it captured their imagination in such a big way.

In the lower years it could be used as a whole class story, perhaps reading a chapter at the end of the day before home time. I used it in PSHE (to discuss bullying) and as a stimulus for writing which really engaged the children.CineMart is an event where film professionals can network and find "money for projects to be realized either through co-production or any other means" for films that are at various stages of development. As well as books and plays for adults, Philip has written many other books for children including Krindlekrax (1991), winner of the Smarties Prize and the WH Smith, Mind-Boggling Books Award, Kasper in the Glitter (1994), nominated for the Whitbread Prize, and Scribbleboy (1997), shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. The monster threatens Lizard Street, this is when Ruskin has a chance to prove he has what it takes to be a hero.

And when Krindlekrax threatens Lizard Street, Ruskin has the chance to prove he really is the stuff heroes are made of! But beneath the dark bricks and cracked pavements of Lizard Street lurks the mysterious Krindlekrax.

Characters in Philip Ridley’s stories usually have catchphrases, and these can become refrains to be joined in with when the books are read aloud.

I was really glad that it ended the way it did, with Ruskin being a great role model for children who may find themselves in similar situations (friendship-wise, not battling a sewer beast! The book is intended for Key Stage 2 English readers and aims to help teachers organise tasks which introduce children to a range of specific key reading skills as outlined in the reading PoS. It was first published in 1991 by Jonathan Cape and republished in 1992 by Red Fox and then again in 2001 by Puffin Books where it is still in print.Later, Ruskin finds out from his drunken dad that everyone in Lizard Street was responsible for the monster getting into the sewers in the first place, and how it grew so big. As an American, I can't help but feel insulted that the name of a famous American entertainer (Elvis) was chosen for the name of the dim-witted lummox that serves as the villain of the piece.

Smarties Prize-winning children's fantasy about the mysterious dragon Krindlekrax who lives beneath the cracked pavements on Lizard Street. Krindlekrax was one of the books featured and appeared alongside such classics as Roald Dahl's Matilda and J. had that surreal feel of Skellig, although obv very different, with eccentric characters and dreamlike anecdotes. My brother was never really into reading, which is another reason why my Mum recommended it to me as it is popular with boys and engages them with reading. There is an element of fear to the story, but not too much to frighten young children, just to create suspense and mystery.Lace: The school teacher who enjoys sucking pencils and gets hysterical whenever William Shakespeare's name is mentioned. I liked how the description of each character was so powerful and the illustrations gave a sense of how weird and wonderful the characters in Lizard Street are. I did find the Elvis character almost overwhelmingly irritating, but like a good pantomime villain it makes for more cheers when things are evened out at the end.
