Tessa Bailey is back with a Schitt's Creek-inspired rom-com about a Hollywood "It Girl" who's cut off from her wealthy family and exiled to a small Pacific Northwest beach town. I felt we never got to see these two actually have a REAL conversation to get to know each other before they both claimed they were in love. But throughout it all, Piper discovers herself and her duality and her many complexities and that she’s allowed her presence on social media to rule her life.

He occasionally shows “rare male vulnerability” but mostly Brendan’s expression is one of “male appreciation [that draws] his features tight. One look at her and this prick had become as dismissive of her abilities as her stepfather and her ex-boyfriend. The backstory of why she is in Westport and all the supporting characters add so much heart to this whole thing. There was more to it than your usual chick lit and it made Cornwall sound like a fabulous place to visit.

I actually found out after reading it that it was apparently inspired by the show Schitt’s Creek which I’ve never watched but now I. Brendan managed to remain a simp throughout this ENTIRE book, and for the first half of it, he hides his attraction behind a grumpy exterior which Piper is semi oblivious to.

Also if I ever have to hear a pussy referred to as "her femininity" ever again it'll be far too fucking soon.

Resistance is futile, especially after she is made redundant, so Nell heads off to deepest, rural Cornwall with daughter Cass in tow. I've written stories and poems since I was a kid, and am delighted that making up stories is now my 'proper job. When she gets turned on, she doesn’t get wet: “feminine pleasure turned to slickness between her thighs. She trespasses the Mondrian hotel to give an after party at the roof top pool, inviting thousands of people.

Now you might be thinking that I have no desire to read book two, Hook, Line and Sinker, in this series. It Happened One Summer also highlights the phoniness of social media and the significance of love and family. They literally go on one date before they jump in bed, and then both start thinking they love each other within about three weeks of knowing each other. As she reconnects with her past and begins to feel at home in Westport, Piper starts to wonder if the cold, glamorous life she knew is what she truly wants.
