About this deal

While this doesn’t seem to bother Yamato, Kakeru wants more people to see just how great his friend is and tries to get him to put himself out there more, but things suddenly get awkward between these two friends when Kakeru asks Yamato if there’s anyone he likes and Yamato responds be saying: “Kakeru. Since he believed that the handsome, popular Yamato would never feel the same way, Kakeru was stunned when Yamato admitted he would be upset if Kakeru got a girlfriend. I wish I could read Japanese for the raw chapters, because I could only find up to chapter 5 of English translation.

Yamato, on the other hand, is smart, handsome and composed, but most people find him hard to approach and he doesn’t really have any friends, aside from Kakeru. It's the classic BL setup of a guy in love with his somewhat oblivious childhood friend and is scared of rejection. This book has such a slow burn with interrupted confession scenes, misunderstandings, and several romantic tropes. Having been established since February 2004, Anime UK News is constantly striving to deliver high quality UK anime news and reviews to your computer screens each and every day, being sure to maintain high standards of writing and reliability.

By going back to the time when the two were in elementary school and gradually revealing to us the shadow darkening Yamato and his little sister Mikoto’s lives, we get to see how important Kakeru’s sunny nature has been to Yamato. Frieren is still going strong continuing from last season, but The Dangers in My Heart is the one stealing the spotlight! Now we begin to learn more about Yamato’s parents; his mother is holding the family together, aided by Kakeru’s parents, as his father is in a coma after an accident that happened when he was in Sendai on business. Due to this unprecedented incident, Yamato, who has been secretly admiring Kakeru for quite some time, may never reach his heart.I'm really struggling to say anything about the "cute high-schooler childhood friends make insane leaps of logic to deny they like each other" plot.

It’s interesting to see events from Mikoto’s perspective – although as the chapter revolves around the hair accessory which Yamato brought back for her from Kyoto, we not only observe her with her peers (and one cheerful boy in her class who undoubtedly has feelings for her but doesn’t quite know how to express them), we also see – again – that Yamato’s classmate Hosoda has a more than passing interest in her. Looking back over the last five volumes, a picture emerges of a long companionship that is slowly disintegrating because the two friends no longer share the same goals. I really loved seeing Yamato and Kakeru experience all the flavours and confusions of youth as they learn to explore and rediscover what they mean to each other.

Extras at the end comprise a page of helpful translation notes and the mangaka’s Afterword, as well as several amusing bonus shorts, including ‘If Yamato Was Cheerful and Kakeru Was Not’. Yamato tries to express his feelings, but when he learns that someone he cares about shares the same feelings for Kakeru, he is hesitant and confused.
