About this deal

In this movie version, I felt that the actor who played Laurie was much less attractive than the Professor, who Jo ended up with.

Last year, Louisa May Alcott’s novel celebrated its 150th anniversary, and it was on my mind after I read reviews in both The New Republic and The Atlantic of the book Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy: The Story of Little Women and Why It Still Matters by Anne Boyd Rioux. To find out what personal information we collect and how we use it, please visit our privacy policy. Much of what I know about the novel outside of its pages I learned from Professor Rioux, or by springboarding from her footnotes. With over 6 million of the world’s best eBooks to choose from, Kobo offers you a whole world of reading. Whether we agree with the narrative choices she made or not, she definitely wrote characters that stepped off the printed page and became real to generations of readers. Although the setting is not explicitly identified, it is very much like Concord, Massachusetts where the Alcotts lived.

I read at least one of the sequels and loved the 1995 movie version, but have not read the book in many, many years. On the flyleaf and front free endpaper is written, once in pen and a few times in pencil, "Lizzie C. Although the March family is on the poor end of the economic spectrum when compared with people they know and socialize with, they do have a maid named Hannah.Heavy scuffing to cloth, spine cloth is separated from back gutter at bottom to midway, top edge is chipped. Jo is the strong sister and I think that she believes that she can bear the her own heartache better than causing Beth one of her own. I think my problem with the opening of Little Women was the way that Louisa May Alcott introduces all four sisters right up front, and gives each character a turn as if she were dealing a hand of poker. That was really the reason I decided on the reread, and decided to read not only the unabridged book, but the sequels as well. Andrew Smith, senior v-p and publisher of Abrams Children’s Books, said in a statement, “ Little Women promises to be the event movie of the holiday season and we’re thrilled to be working with the filmmakers and the team at Sony Pictures on a creative publishing program that extends and enhances the experience of the film. But the strongest proof that Beth is narratively predetermined to die is that nobody does a darned thing to stop her from dying. Except not everyone bought the ending where Jo marries the Professor – especially not those of us who remember the Laurie of Part 1, and had expectations of his becoming a man of great character (because any young man who can see past Jo’s lack of elegance and apparent beauty, and appreciates her deeply for her character and talent – he likes her best of all, though he doesn’t think she’s the prettiest woman he knows – surely would continue on that path, especially in, as you point out, a coming of age moralistic story), and an adventurous life for Jo. As much as I love to read, I love good movies even as much, if not more, and this was truly a great movie!Sourcing nineteenth-century type cases and other printing accessories sent Eastland to Portland, Maine, letterpress printer David Wolfe, who came to the set laden with tools of the trade. Lying back on the sofa, she read the manuscript carefully through, making dashes here and there, and putting in many exclamation points, which looked like little balloons; then she tied it up with a smart red ribbon, and sat a minute looking at it with a sober, wistful expression, which plainly showed how earnest her work had been.
