About this deal

I am afraid to like any lore or history now because i expect to be told "but thats just one view" and have it changed later. Comment by Atiaens on 2023-10-28T04:58:26-05:00 You are following unknown winds, my friend, and I worry for you,” Vyranoth said. “You are the most honorable of our kind, Alexstrasza. I loved you as you were, and it pains me to see you bow, to change yourself for another. From where I stand—admittedly, on the outside—I fear the keepers seek to exert control over you and your flights.” You know I treasure our friendship, Alexstrasza, but this . . .” Vyranoth trailed off, shaking her head.

One is led to wonder who Blizzard's target audience is here. Those who are looking for more enlightenment about events in the game will get a lesson in history, but not one that, unlike in Shadowlands, is as necessary. Lore aficionados will find themselves irritated by odd retcons. In an IP as large and sprawling as Warcraft, some retcons are inevitable. Once all of the disparate data about a character or event are pulled together and evaluated, there are going to be contradictions. It is up to the writer working with Blizzard to tease out the threads that will become canon, and discard those that contradict the chosen path. These small things are part of the nature of writing lore for a universe and history that has already been told so many times by so many different writers in so many different media. This is understandable, but these retcons need precedent and, if there is likely to be a question from the reader, explanation. The lore conversant may be confused by some choices. The casual reader may just be confused. Courtney Alameda is a YA horror writer. She has acclaim in that field - she was nominated for the coveted Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel in 2015 - and has also written for Blizzard's Diablo franchise. Ms. Alameda is a fine writer and a good storyteller. Unfortunately Blizzard seems to take a heavy hand with its franchise writers, resulting in somewhat choppy prose in places, and an assumption that the reader is a current player, requiring foreknowledge of events and situations. The characterizations and balance between making dragon protagonists relatable but also very much not human is excellent. It’s not really answered, it just seems to be at random/along bloodlines. What I noticed is that the close family of sentient proto-drakes is usually sentient too. This conflict is afforded another level of complexity because the dragons themselves are being meddled with. Titans, Old Gods, and the elements - through Iridikron - are are all inserting their will into the evolution of a species. That's alot of pillow talk to basically admit it's full of Retcons. Comment by Natakutdh on 2023-10-28T04:48:55-05:00 The upcoming World of Warcraft companion novel War of the Scaleborn tells of the events that transpired 20,000 years ago after the defeat of Galakrond until its end with the imprisonment of all four Primal Incarnates. While the novel illuminates and expands on information that players have learned during the course of the campaign in Dragonflight, it doesn’t provide information on what’s next for the Dragonflights or the Incarnates in World of Warcraft. That said, there are some places and a few named dragons that are new in the book which could see a return in the future.

Penned by bestselling author Courtney Alameda and published by Random House Worlds* you won’t want to miss this pitched and poignant tale of the oaths we make and the duty we have to one another. And we should not have to pay extra for lore that should be in the Game in the first place. That is one of the biggest weaknesses of WoW. you need to buy extra content to even know what is going on or what the motivations for the main bad guys truly are. Does it elaborate at all on how the Incarnates got their powers? That’s just been completely not mentioned in the game. Would love to know more about the author! Long time reader of these books, but some have fell really short due to some creative choices. Hope this isn't one of em. Looks really cool so far Comment by 2lazy2jz on 2023-06-14T13:32:49-05:00
